Paulie Malignaggi to fight in Abu Dhabi?

Paulie Malignaggi's next fight may not be in Brooklyn after all. In fact, it looks as though he may be traveling a very long way to defend his WBA title. Johnny Eames and Gianluca Di Caro announced today that they have recently created a new promotional company, Showtime Sports Events Limited, and that they are planning to promote events in both the UK and overseas. And from the looks of it, they are getting off to a good start.

Eames and Di Caro already have their first huge event in mind. They are very close to inking a deal with WBA welterweight champ Paulie Malignaggi in a plan that may send him to Abu Dhabi, where he will defend his WBA welterweight belt against Argentina’s Diego Gabriel Chaves. They hope to land the fight sometime in April.

“First of all, I’d like to say how excited I am.” Eames officially stated. “After fifteen years in the pro boxing game, kicking my heels, so to speak, I’m finally in a position where I can give promises I know I can keep. We had made separate approaches to two of the three biggest fighters out there, Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao. Unfortunately, our timing or something like that didn’t work for them so we had to move on. But we’ve still got a big name, Paulie Malignaggi, headlining our first show supported by a great undercard.”

Originally they had planned to target Paulie Malignaggi vs Ricky Hatton; however Hatton’s recent loss sent him back to retirement forcing them to move on. Then they began discussions with Juan Manuel Marquez but after weeks of talks they realized that Marquez wasn’t going to make the deal even after offering him millions of dollars. They tried with Pacquiao shortly after but that wasn’t going to go anywhere either. After Paulie’s fight with Mosley fell through they immediately reached out to him.

“I would like to thank Paulie, Steven, and Golden Boy’s Richard Schaefer, for their professionalism and willingness to discuss our proposal." Eames went on to say. While no official date has been set, the card may also feature Mexico’s Marco Antonio Rubio. “We just can’t wait for our first fight night. It’s going to be awesome!”
