Biggest fights of the year

Unlike 2020, 2021 has been jam-packed with sporting events. Even though fans haven’t really been able to attend many, the fact that sport is back up and running is clearly a great thing. Boxing has been no different, with many huge fights still on the cards for the rest of this year. Hopefully, fans can return soon, and casino’s can be the home of huge fights again until then you can always try your hand at some sports themed slots.

Jake Paul vs Ben Askren

One of the more unusual fights for the year is Jake Paul squaring up against Ben Askren. While a Youtuber fighting a former UFC fighter sounds a bit gimmicky, the hype surrounding it is hard to ignore. Jake Paul has been walking around like he is God’s gift to boxing, and while Askren is a strange opponent to try to prove it to, Askren can most certainly sit Paul down within one round. As mentioned, this fight is possibly gimmicky, but potentially seeing a known arrogant loud-mouth like Jake Paul getting knocked out is definitely worth a watch.

Canelo Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders

Canelo is on the march to solidify himself as the main man at super-middleweight. He has left a path of destruction in his wake, and his next fight is against well respected Brit, Billy Joe Saunders. Saunders is the current WBO belt holder, and Canelo is planning on adding to his belt collection. Saunders is aiming to prove himself in a second weight class, having come off a great winning streak, however, Canelo is deadly, everyone knows this, but a result either way will either prove to be a massive upset if Saunders wins, or Canelo crowning himself the super-middleweight king.

Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury

Probably one of the biggest fights of the year, Anthony Joshus vs Tyson Fury is the fight fans have been waiting for. While a date hasn’t been set yet, the fight could take place in July in Saudi Arabia, but there is the chance it could take place on July 24th at Wembley.

There isn’t much to be said that hasn’t been said before, as this will be the biggest fight of the year. However, contract disputes have put many people in the dark, as there is still the chance that this fight just doesn’t happen. However, both Fury’s team and Joshua’s have stated that negotiations are ongoing, and that a final date could be confirmed within the next couple of weeks.

Derek Chisora vs Joseph Parker

A fight that could have an influence on either Tyson Fury or Anthony Joshua, Derek Chisora vs Joseph Parker is the “other” heavyweight bout set to take place this year. While both fighters have been a bit indifferent in their past few fights, the winner of this could very easily be next in line for a title shot.

This is exactly what promoter Eddie Hearn has said as well, with the promoter stating that a Joseph Parker win can put him in pole position to get the heavyweight shot he has been waiting for. The heavyweight division hasn’t been this exciting for a while. It will be interesting to see who is lining up to face each other after these huge fights have been fought.

Jose Ramirez vs Josh Taylor

May 22nd will be the day IBF/WBA Junior Welterweight champion Josh Taylor goes head to head with WBC/WBO championships holder Jose Ramirez for the undisputed championship. Arguably a bigger fight compared to Joshua vs Fury. This one can easily be viewed as a career defying fight for both boxers.

They are both in their prime, they are facing each other at exactly the right time, neither fighter has been in better shape and it is already viewed as the “perfect” fight. With Ramirez sitting at 26-0 with 17 knockouts, and Taylor sitting at 17-0 with 13 knockouts, one man will have their first loss, and it can very easily be the loss that changes their boxing career forever.

Ryan Garcia vs Gervonta Davis

A fight that does not have a confirmed date yet, but can still happen this year, is Ryn Garcia vs Gervonta Davis. Floyd Mayweather and Golden Boy Productions have even gone so far as to say it will be the biggest fight in boxing when it does happen.

A bout between the lightweight rivals is inevitable at this point, and while many can agree that the fight should happen soon, there are no concrete details yet, we just have to wait and see if and when a date is agreed.

These are only a handful of the fights happening this year, with many of them being career defining for each boxer. As you can tell, the current pandemic hasn’t stopped world-class bouts from happening.

All we can do now is sit back and wait for these fights to roll around. Some will end undefeated streaks, some will finally prove who is the best in their weight class, and some are just fights that need to happen.
