Maidana KO's Lopez, Lara TKO's Angulo in thrillers

Marcos Maidana improved to (34-3, 31 KO's) as he defeated Joseito Lopez (30-6, 18 KO's) by 6th round KO in what was leading up to, and could still possibly be a Fight of the Year candidate. After feeling out each other in the first round with jabs and boxing, both fighters turned to what they do best, brawl. Maidana appeared to have the early edge with his pressure and power but Lopez began to take over as he nearly had Maidana on the canvas a few times. It appeared that Lopez was in control of the fight but in the fifth round Maidana came back and began to land very hard body and head shots. Maidana hurt Lopez in the sixth enough to put him on the ropes and brutalize him until the referee stopped the fight.

In the co-main event, Erislandy Lara (18-1, 12 KO's) survived two brutal knockdowns from Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO's), and managed to stop Angulo with a tenth round TKO. Lara landed two left hands that may have broken a bone in Angulo's eye that forced Angulo to turn his head and walk away. The referee said that because Angulo walked away without being knocked down or taking a knee then he couldn't allow him to continue. Angulo spent most of the fight drilling Lara's body which allowed him to land some punches to the head, and opened up the two left hooks that caused the two knockdowns in the fight. Lara used his superior speed and boxing skills to land flush shots on Angulo the entire fight. Two judges had Lara up and one judge had Angulo winning at the time of the stoppage.
