Has Amir Khan vs Kell Brook arrived 5 years too late?

As two of the most talked about British boxers in a generation, the meeting between Amir Khan and Kell Brook looks to have finally arrived.

With both men having enjoyed stellar spells in the Welterweight division over the past decade, a showdown between the two men has been on the cards for promoters and boxing fans alike for what seems like an eternity.

However, contractual obligations and out of the ring distractions looked to have stopped the fight from happening, before both men agreed to get it on in Manchester on February 19th, 2022.

Recent performances from both men suggest that they are perhaps past their respective bests, with Terrance Crawford the current undisputed number one in the Welterweight division.

The public appeal of this fight however remains as strong as ever, with tickets at the AO Arena in Manchester selling out in just 10 minutes and with a packed undercard lined up too, it promises to be a memorable night of British boxing – even if it has arguably come 5 years too late.

Sheffield hitman Kell Brook has long been one of the most successful British fighters, with his durability and incredible punching power making him a match for anyone around the world.

With just 3 losses from 42 fights, Brook is a true stayer and in 2017 was ranked the number 1 Welterweight fighter on the planet. Now at the age of 35 however, Brook does look to be past dining at the top table in the division, but his fitness regime is as intense as any fighter in the world.

At -167 to win the fight against Amir Khan, Brook is the clear favourite and with such bad blood between the two fighters lasting the best part of a decade, how the man from Sheffield would love to silence a few doubters and claim the win here, reported Offers.Bet.

Amir Khan finds himself in a similar position in his career, also at the age of 35 and he is arguably one of the biggest underachieving British fighters of all time.

A teen prodigy at the 2004 Athens Olympics, Khan looked destined to shake up the established order in boxing but 5 intermittent losses at the wrong times and a catalogue of errors outside the ring have left his career in a relative state of flux.

Many felt he had potentially stepped into the ring for the last time when he was outclassed by Terrance Crawford in 2019 but he recovered quickly to beat Billy Dib later that year. However, he hasn’t fought professionally since and this should be a real step up in quality.

Hailing from Bolton, Khan is likely to have plenty of home support in the AO Arena in Manchester and Brook’s Yorkshire heritage could make for a partisan atmosphere on 19th February.

That may not be enough though for Khan, who finds himself as the outsider for the fight at +250 to win this one but stranger things have certainly happened in the world of boxing.

Whilst this fight looks to have come in the twilight periods in both fighter’s respective careers, it should be a real humdinger in Manchester and with no love lost between the two fighters, it could be a memorable evening at the AO Arena.
