Saul “Canelo” Alvarez made his first public appearance since his September victory over Edgar Berlanga, where he secured a unanimous decision win after a knockdown. On Thursday, the super middleweight champion, whose record stands at 62-2-2 (39 KOs), addressed the media during the grand opening of El Pastor Del Rica, a new Mexican restaurant in Chula Vista, California.
Alvarez, a guest of honor at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, revealed that his favorite dish on the menu is tacos al pastor. However, the gathering wasn’t just about food. Alvarez took the opportunity to share insights into his career trajectory for 2025. When asked about the possibility of a much-anticipated fight against Terence Crawford, Alvarez was noncommittal but candid.
“Right now, I’m focusing on other things,” said Alvarez. “I’m enjoying my family. I’m not thinking about boxing yet. Maybe in January, we’ll start discussing it.”
Open to Business Ventures
Canelo also discussed his ongoing partnership with Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority. The Mexican star expressed a pragmatic approach to opportunities outside the ring.
“I never say no to business,” Alvarez stated. “If it’s good business for me, I’m open to talking, no matter what.”
This openness seems to extend to potential fights as well. When asked about Jake Paul, who recently gained attention with a lucrative bout against Mike Tyson, Alvarez offered a measured response.
On Mike Tyson and Jake Paul
“I feel sad about what I saw from Mike Tyson,” Alvarez said, referring to Tyson’s age and performance in the exhibition fight. “At his age, he shouldn’t be doing that kind of stuff. But it’s business for them, so it’s fine, whatever.”
Alvarez admitted the fight stirred emotions. “When I saw the fight, I thought about getting revenge for Tyson, about the injustice of it all. But we’ll see. Right now, I’m focused on my own thing.”
Looking Ahead
For now, Canelo Alvarez is relishing time with his family and exploring opportunities outside the ring. Fans may need to wait until early 2025 for updates on his next moves in boxing.
