Kansas blue-chip prospect Marco "El Tiburón" Romero (4-0, 3 KOs), who recently turned 19, has not forgotten his roots, as he proved this past Monday.
Romero joined a volunteer group of nurses and friends, led by Lisa Oakes, to spread holiday cheer at the City Union Mission Family Center in Kansas City, Missouri. There, they served meals to parents and single women with children who were in need of shelter and assistance with life necessities.
“I had the honor of helping out at the City Union Mission Family Center,” said Romero, a 23-time national amateur champion. “We brought smiles to the faces of parents and children, serving Kansas City’s finest brisket and pulled pork. It’s a privilege to give back to my community, something I’ve always wanted to do. By giving back, I not only help others, but I also grow as a person, gaining a deeper appreciation for the blessings in my own life.”
Romero, a promotional free agent, has had an exceptional 12 months, winning all 13 of his fights. This includes nine victories in elite amateur competition—three at the USA Boxing National Championships and five at the National Golden Gloves Tournament, where he was named Most Outstanding Boxer. He closed the year with a perfect 4-0 record as a professional, with three knockouts.
Mature for his age, Romero is taking a well-deserved break from boxing to spend the holidays with his family and friends. He is expected to return to the ring in early 2025 for what promises to be a standout year.
“Marco is a manager/coach’s dream,” said his legendary Kansas-based manager and head trainer, John Brown. “He’s driven by a desire for success, with a solid work ethic, mental toughness, and a great sense of humor that makes working with him a true pleasure.”
City Union Mission’s programs help parents gain the skills and support they need to provide for their families, offering classes, counseling, job training, and a Biblical foundation. Children also benefit from stability, education, chapel services, classroom instruction, daycare, and Bible studies.
