WBO Welterweight Champion Brian Norman Jr. Ready to Defend Title in Tokyo Against Jin Sasaki

Undefeated WBO Welterweight World Champion Brian “The Assassin” Norman Jr. is set to defend his title on foreign soil for the first time as he takes on Japan’s own Jin Sasaki this Thursday, June 19. The bout will stream live on ESPN+, with the main event expected to begin at 7:15 a.m. ET / 4:15 a.m. PT.

“I’m the true definition of a world champion,” said Norman (27-0, 21 KOs), who recently renewed his partnership with Fighters First Management. “This is what being a champion is all about—showcasing your skills globally, no matter the venue or conditions.”

Norman arrived in Japan weeks ahead of the fight and has adjusted seamlessly to training overseas.

“There hasn’t been any real adjustment—training is training, regardless of where you are,” said Norman, who is trained by his father, Brian Norman Sr. “I’ve done this my whole life. Being in another country doesn’t change how you walk, and it doesn’t change how I prepare. This camp has been incredible. I fought just three months ago, so I was already sharp coming in. I want to stay this active—I want to be a champion that represents the people.”

The 24-year-old will face 23-year-old Sasaki (19-1-1, 17 KOs), who has been unbeaten since fully moving up to welterweight in 2022 and is riding a seven-fight win streak. Despite Sasaki’s momentum, Norman is confident in the homework he’s done.

“I’ve studied his habits, techniques, and tendencies. Unless he grows a third arm, he can’t surprise me,” Norman said. “I expect him to fight harder than ever given the stakes, but the outcome remains the same—I came here with my belt, and I’m leaving with it.”

Hailing from Decatur, Georgia, Norman has embraced his growing fan base and says their support continues to fuel his performances.

“No matter where I fight, the fans push me to give it my all,” he added. “They’re the reason I train so hard. I promise you won’t be disappointed—even if it ends quickly.”

Norman captured the WBO title in May 2024 with a 10th-round knockout over Giovani Santillan and successfully defended it in March with a third-round TKO of Derrieck Cuevas. As he continues to rise, Norman believes he’s building a legacy destined to leave a mark.

“My mindset has been my biggest growth since becoming champion,” he said. “That’s what separates the good from the great. I truly believe I’m unstoppable—and I plan to go down in history as that guy.”
