On July 2, 2025, Mexican boxer Julio César Chávez Jr., son of boxing legend Julio César Chávez Sr., was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Studio City, California, just days after his unanimous decision loss to Jake Paul in a cruiserweight bout on June 28 at the Honda Center in Anaheim. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that Chávez Jr. is being processed for expedited removal from the United States due to an active arrest warrant in Mexico for his alleged involvement in organized crime and trafficking firearms, ammunition, and explosives.
Chávez Jr., a former WBC middleweight champion, is accused of affiliations with the Sinaloa Cartel, a designated foreign terrorist organization. The DHS stated that he entered the U.S. legally in August 2023 on a B2 tourist visa, valid until February 2024, but was later deemed removable due to fraudulent declarations in his residency application. Authorities also noted his prior legal troubles, including a January 2024 arrest in Los Angeles for illegal possession of an assault weapon, to which he pleaded not guilty and entered a residential treatment program.
