At Benina Stadium today, Argentine featherweight knockout artist Mirco Cuello made a powerful statement to the boxing world, stopping previously unbeaten Sergio Rios in the second round to claim the vacant WBA Interim Featherweight Championship.
With former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson watching from ringside, Cuello (16-0, 13 KOs), the WBA’s top-ranked contender, wasted little time asserting his dominance over Rios (19-1, 7 KOs), who entered the fight ranked 15th by the sanctioning body. Late in the opening round, Cuello dropped Rios with a sharp lead right hand, setting the tone for what was to come.
In the second round, the Argentine delivered a punishing left hand to the head, sending Rios to the canvas again with 30 seconds left in the round. Moments later, a crushing left hook to the body ended the contest for good, cementing Cuello’s victory and his status as a rising star in the featherweight division.
Promoter Sampson Lewkowicz was quick to praise his fighter’s performance.
“No one can ignore what Mirco Cuello just did to an undefeated top contender like Rios,” Lewkowicz said. “Mirco Cuello is the next Argentinean superstar. No one in the division can take his power for 12 rounds. No one.”
Cuello’s emphatic win positions him as a major force at 126 pounds, and with his growing reputation as a dangerous finisher, the boxing world will be watching closely to see who dares to face him next.
