Vergil Ortiz Jr And Golden Boy Lawsuit Continues

Undefeated WBC interim junior middleweight champion Vergil Ortiz Jr. has filed a lawsuit against Golden Boy Promotions, seeking to terminate his promotional contract with the company led by Oscar De La Hoya.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Nevada in January, alleges breach of contract and interference with Ortiz’s ability to secure major fights and maximize his earnings. Ortiz and his legal team argue that Golden Boy failed to properly pursue key opportunities most notably a highly anticipated matchup with fellow star Jaron “Boots” Ennis.

Ortiz also claims he has the contractual right to leave Golden Boy because the company’s broadcasting relationship with DAZN expired at the end of 2025. According to the filing, that clause would allow him to terminate the agreement and pursue other promotional options.

Golden Boy strongly disputes those claims. The company argues that its relationship with DAZN is ongoing and that Ortiz remains bound to a three-year promotional deal signed in May 2024. Promoter Oscar De La Hoya has stated the company intends to “aggressively defend” the contract and maintain its promotional rights.

The dispute has already had major implications for the sport. A Nevada judge recently ruled that the case must proceed to arbitration and barred Ortiz from negotiating or signing with other promoters until the matter is resolved. The decision effectively places any potential fights including the rumored Ennis showdown on hold for the time being.

Ortiz remains undefeated at 24-0 with 22 knockouts, and the legal battle could play a significant role in determining the direction of one of boxing’s rising stars during his prime years.
