Gervonta Davis vs. Floyd Schofield Jr. Targeted as WBA Deadline Nears

Negotiations are underway for a potential WBA lightweight title fight between Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Floyd Schofield Jr., according to two officials close to the situation.

Davis’ promoter, Premier Boxing Champions, has reportedly opened talks with Schofield’s promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, as both sides work toward a deal before the WBA’s June 22 deadline. The fight is being targeted for a date between mid-September and early October.

Schofield, 23, is unbeaten at 19-0 with 13 knockouts and currently sits as the WBA’s No. 1 lightweight contender. Nicknamed “Kid Austin,” the Texas fighter earned his position after stopping veteran former super featherweight champion Tevin Farmer last June.

Davis, 31, is 30-0-1 with 28 knockouts and has not fought since his controversial March 1, 2025, draw with Lamont Roach Jr. at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. During that bout, referee Steve Willis did not rule a knockdown in favor of Roach, a call that would have changed the outcome and handed Roach the victory.

Davis has also faced legal issues outside the ring, including criminal and civil cases tied to allegations of physical abuse involving a former partner.

The WBA has ordered Davis and Schofield to reach an agreement by June 22. If no deal is made, the fight will go to a purse bid. Should Davis choose not to fight for the vacant title, Schofield would be elevated to champion.

Schofield Jr. has long wanted a shot at Davis, according to his father. That desire reportedly dates back to a gym session years ago, when Davis knocked out an older stablemate and friend of Schofield during sparring.
