Cameron Upsets Mayer In War
Chantelle Cameron outpointed Mikaela Mayer by unanimous decision on Saturday night at bp pulse LIVE in Birmingham, taking the WBA and WBC super welterweight titles to add to the WBO belt she already held. The scores after 10 rounds were 97-93, 97-93 and 96-94. Cameron is also the Ring Magazine champion at 154 pounds.
Mayer, 36, started well behind her jab. Cameron, 35, walked her down, worked the body and landed the cleaner shots as the fight progressed. A right hand in the eighth hurt Mayer. Both fighters were cut in the later rounds and were still exchanging after the clapper in the 10th. Cameron finished the last three rounds the stronger on CompuBox and edged the connect count 148-147 while throwing far fewer punches.
Cameron's record is 23-1. Mayer's is 22-3, and this was her third points defeat on English soil, following losses to Alycia Baumgardner and Natasha Jonas. The win is Cameron's most significant since she beat Katie Taylor in 2023.
There was no reconciliation afterwards. Mayer told Cameron she had outboxed her and described the result as home cooking. Cameron responded that talk is cheap and said she wants a rematch contested over three-minute rounds rather than two. The two had clashed at Friday's weigh-in, where they butted heads and security intervened.
Oshae Jones holds the IBF belt at super welterweight, leaving a rematch or a four-belt unification as the next matters to be settled.
The bout headlined the MVPW-06 UK vs. USA card. On the undercard, Caroline Dubois retained her WBC, WBO and Ring lightweight titles with a unanimous decision over Amelia Moore, winning 99-90, 99-90 and 98-91 over 10 rounds. Terri Harper stopped Miranda Reyes in the second round at super lightweight. Reina Tellez beat Jessica Barry on points over 10 rounds at featherweight, and Gemma Paige Richardson took a six-round points decision over Kirstie Bavington. Shannon Courtenay and Ebonie Cotton drew over six rounds at super flyweight, scored 57-57.
