Devin Haney vs Jack Catterall Next?
A welterweight showdown between WBO champion Devin Haney and Britain’s Jack Catterall could be on the way, with reports indicating the two sides are negotiating a potential October 3 fight.
Haney is looking to make the first defense of his WBO welterweight title, and Catterall has emerged as the leading candidate. Reports initially described negotiations as advanced, although Catterall’s manager, Sam Jones, has indicated that while the fight and proposed date have been accepted on their side, contracts have yet to be signed.
The negotiations come after Haney had been linked to a unification fight against newly crowned IBF welterweight champion Liam Paro. Those talks appear to have stalled, opening the door for Catterall to step in for the October date.
Catterall would present an interesting challenge for Haney. The British southpaw has established himself as one of the division’s most difficult opponents and would get an opportunity to capture another major world championship if a deal is finalized.
For Haney, the fight would also represent another important step in his run at welterweight. A victory over Catterall could keep several major options open, including potential unification bouts and a lucrative rematch with Ryan Garcia down the road.
Nothing is official yet, but with Catterall’s side publicly stating that it has accepted the proposed fight and October 3 date, Haney-Catterall appears to be one of the more realistic options currently on the table.
