Katie Taylor Says Goodbye To Boxing With Victory
Katie Taylor ended her professional career Saturday night with a unanimous decision win over Flora Pili in front of more than 80,000 fans at Croke Park in Dublin.
The judges scored the 10-round bout 100-90, 100-90 and 98-91 for Taylor. The result made her a three-time undisputed world champion and left her retiring as the undisputed super lightweight champion. Pili entered the fight unbeaten.
Taylor, 40, controlled the contest with the speed, footwork and combination punching that characterised her career. Pili had difficulty closing the distance as Taylor landed and moved out of range. In the closing seconds of the 10th, Taylor let go of a long combination before embracing Pili after the bell.
After the decision was read, Taylor confirmed her retirement and placed her gloves in the centre of the ring. She leaves the professional ranks with one defeat, world titles in two weight divisions and three undisputed championships. Her career also included Olympic gold in 2012 and a trilogy with Amanda Serrano.
On the undercard, Paddy Donovan stopped Tyrone McKenna in the fourth round on a doctor's stoppage. The heavyweight meeting between Dave Allen and Thomas Carty was ruled a no contest in the first round after Carty fell through the ropes and was unable to continue.
Taylor Bevan knocked out Emmet Brennan in the sixth. Molly McCann beat Sylwia Doligala by unanimous decision, 80-72, 80-73 and 79-73. Joe McGrail knocked out Matthew Boreland in the fifth, and Adam Olaniyan won by first-round technical knockout over Matej Hudak. Bobbi Flood took a 40-36 decision over Jack Swallow.
The Paul Ryan–Paddy Gallagher bout produced confusion at the final bell. Gallagher was initially announced as the winner before officials reviewed the scorecard and corrected the result, giving Ryan the decision at 58-55.
