Jojo Awinongya: USA Boxing’s Rising Star Sets His Sights on Olympic Glory

Joseph “Jojo” Awinongya is making waves in the boxing world, and his momentum shows no signs of slowing down. After capturing gold at the inaugural World Boxing U19 Championships, the Joliet, Illinois native has emerged as a strong contender for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Representing Team USA last November, Awinongya displayed poise and dominance throughout the tournament. He cruised to victory with a first-round stoppage, followed by a unanimous decision and a composed 4-1 split decision win in the gold medal match. With each performance, Awinongya has solidified his reputation as one of the top young talents in international amateur boxing.

“Winning gold at the World Boxing U19 Championships proved that the style I developed can work at the highest levels,” said Awinongya. “When the time comes, I believe I can win Olympic gold.”

Competing at 75 kg in Pueblo, Colorado, Awinongya made a statement. Now, he’s preparing to make the leap from youth to elite competition, with a goal to represent the U.S. at the 2025 USA Boxing National Championships in Lubbock, Texas.

Since the beginning of his boxing journey, Awinongya and his family have set their sights on Olympic gold. While the vision has always been clear, he understands the importance of staying grounded.

“Since I started boxing, I’ve been focused on building a style that can win gold,” he said. “But I also know it’s important to stay present and take things one day at a time.”

Next on his path is the prestigious 2025 Brandenburg Cup in Frankfurt (Oder), Germany, scheduled for July 30 to August 2. Awinongya will represent Team USA at 80 kg, his highest weight class to date, as he tests himself against top-tier international competition.

“Germany will be my biggest challenge yet,” he said. “It’s exactly what I need as I prepare to step into the elite level.”

The upcoming tournament is a crucial milestone. A second international gold medal would not only boost his confidence but also mark a major stride toward his ultimate goal: standing atop the podium at the 2028 Olympic Games.

As he prepares to enter this next chapter, Jojo Awinongya continues to grow into a name the boxing world won’t forget. The mission is clear—and the journey is only just beginning.
