In a major development for the super middleweight division, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has signed contracts to challenge undefeated WBC champion Christian Mbilli in September 2026. The bout, set for September 12 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, marks Canelo’s highly anticipated return following a year-long layoff after his unanimous decision loss to Terence Crawford in September 2025.
Background and Stakes
Canelo Alvarez (63-3-2), the 35-year-old Mexican icon and former undisputed champion at 168 pounds, enters this fight looking to reclaim a world title. His loss to Crawford — which drew a record 41 million viewers on Netflix — ended his reign as the division’s dominant force. Many viewed it as a potential sign of decline, but Canelo has repeatedly shown resilience throughout his career, bouncing back from setbacks like his 2022 loss to Dmitry Bivol.
His opponent, Christian Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs), is a 30-year-old Cameroon-born, Canada-based powerhouse known for his explosive power, high volume, and relentless pressure. Mbilli captured the full WBC title after strong performances, including a stoppage of Maciej Sulecki and a hard-fought draw with Lester Martinez on the undercard of Canelo-Crawford. Often called an “all-action fighter,” Mbilli has long sought a marquee matchup and now gets boxing’s biggest star in his first title defense.
The fight will headline a card under Canelo’s own promotional banner, “Canelo Promotions,” in partnership with Saudi boxing initiatives led by Turki Alalshikh. It fits the growing “Mexico vs. The World” theme in Riyadh events. Contracts are signed, and a face-off is scheduled during Oleksandr Usyk vs. Rico Verhoeven fight week in Egypt.
