Raymond Muratalla vs. Andy Cruz - January 24
This IBF Lightweight title fight in Las Vegas, Nevada gives Raymond Muratalla the chance to prove that he deserves the title that was awarded to him when Vasiliy Lomachenko retired. With wins in all 23 fights to date, the California-born fighter’s last bout came in May against Zaur Abdullaev, when he won by unanimous decision to take the vacant IBF title on an interim basis.
As for Andy Cruz, the Cuban boxer won a gold medal at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and after 140 wins in 149 amateur fights turned professional. His pro record so far includes six wins, with three of them by knockout. This is one of the month’s most eagerly-awaited bouts, between two stylish and efficient boxers.
Teofimo Lopez vs. Shakur Stevenson - January 31
The Ring in New York is the setting for this Ring / WBO Super Lightweight Title. New York-born Teofimo Lopez had held world titles in two weight classes. With 22 wins and a single loss so far in his professional career, he is looking to defend his title as part of the Ring VI event.
Shakur Stevenson is the favorite to win this fight. The WBC lightweight title-holder, born in New Jersey, he has 24 wins in 24 fights, but has now decided to step up a weight class to challenge Lopez. It would be his fourth division title if he is successful in this fight.
These events are set to give boxing fans a great month in January, but don’t forget that there are already eye-catching fights lined up for February and beyond that are worth keeping an eye on too.
