The undefeated prospects ready to lead Canadian boxing

Since being founded in 2008, Camille Estephan’s Montreal-based Eye of the Tiger Management (EOTTM) has been the undisputed leader of Canadian boxing. With a stable of fighters led by WBC Super Middleweight Champion Christian Mbilli, the promotion has developed a reputation for staging big cards while still developing local prospects.

Now, three of EOTTM’s undefeated young talents look ready to break out.

The trio of Wilkens Mathieu, Christopher Guerrero and Wyatt Sanford are all primed to make a big impression on the world stage. Mathieu and Guerrero already hold WBC regional belts, while Sanford is on an accelerated path after claiming a medal at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

The three fighters are all electric in the ring, delighting fans in the arena and driving demand for Canadian sportsbook promos to use on the fights. With each boxer ready to step up to the next stage and lead Canadian boxing into a new era, these are the paths they must take.

Mathieu ready for world title step-up

The most developed of the trio is reigning WBC North American Boxing Federation Super Middleweight Champion Wilkens Mathieu. Despite being just 21 years old, he’s quickly amassed a 16-0 record that includes 11 stoppages. This isn’t surprising, with Mathieu able to naturally combine sublime tempo with ferocious power to put his opponents away.

With his recent 8th round TKO win over former world title contender Esquiva Falcão, Mathieu has moved inside the WBC top-10 rankings. He’ll now doubtless face eliminators against the other ranked fighters as he moves towards a challenger spot.

One potential future headache for EOTTM to navigate will be that Mathieu is in the same weight class as their current star fighter, Christian Mbilli. Promoter Estephan will need to keep Mathieu’s progress steady while ensuring Mbilli can fully enjoy his time in the sun. This could get even tricker given Mbilli’s desire to unify the division, as it limits the belts that Mathieu can be directed towards.

World ranking the goal for Guerrero

The next furthest down the pipeline is WBC Continental Americas Welterweight Champion Christopher Guerrero. The 25-year-old has a strong 16-0 record, featuring nine stoppages, but what makes him ready for the big stage is his style.

When fans buy a ticket or pay-per-view for boxing, they want action. That’s exactly what Guerrero delivers. He is known for his charisma and high-volume approach in the ring, while also having the stopping power to deliver the ultimate spectacle.

Guerrero will now hope to use his future title defences to keep climbing the rankings, leading to a breakout fight in 2027. This would let him show off his fan-friendly style to a wider TV audience, and hopefully propel him towards a world title shot.

Sanford’s quick turnaround continues

The slight outlier among the three EOTTM prospects is 2024 Paris Olympics medalist Wyatt Sanford. As with many Olympians-turned-pro boxers, he’s slightly older. At 27, Sanford still only has seven fights, but holds a perfect 7-0 record. This includes three stoppages from the high volume southpaw.

The major difference with Sanford is that EOTTM have him on an accelerated path. Despite only beating Juan Pablo Ilharregui in the second round on June 4th, he’s projected to fight again on the 3rd September card. This tracks with how he’s been managed so far, stepping into the ring every two to three months.

No opponent has been named, but it’s surely time for Sanford to step up against some tougher opponents. He’s dominated the six-round fights against journeyman-level contenders that he’s currently had. The early pace in his career was necessary, but perhaps it’s now time to slow down and take a more measured approach against better challengers.

If EOTTM do keep him on his current path, though, their track record means there’s no reason to doubt them.
