In what will most likely be another fight of the year candidate, Mike Alvarado (34-1, 23 KO's) got revenge by defeating Brandon Rios (31-1-1) on Saturday night at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Scores were 115-113, 115-113, 114-113. Alvarado stuck to his gameplan by not engaging in an inside war, which didn't work to his favor in the first fight. Alvarado circled the ring, switched to southpaw, and picked his battles as he engaged the aggressive Rios throughout the fight. Rios hurt Alvarado in the second round, sending him stumbling in what looked like it could be a early night. Alvarado came back in the third and hurt Rios with an overhand right. After that Rios spent most of the night trying to get to Alvarado, who used is better boxing skills to keep Rios away but still engaging in exciting action. A third fight is expected.
In the co-main event, Terence Crawford (20-0, 15 KO's) maintained his undefeated record by defeating Breidis Prescott (26-5, 20 KO's) by Unanimous Decision. Scores were 100-90, 99-91, and 97-93. Crawford's boxing skills were to much for the power puncher Prescott, who spent much of the night trying to get to the talented Crawford. Crawford easily picked his shots for most of the fight.
