SAN DIEGO (SEPTEMBER 5, 2013)—He is undefeated in his last 21 fights that spans six and a half years and has won titles in two weight divisions, yet Ricky Burns will be fighting for a chance to fulfill a dream when he defends the WBO Lightweight championship against Ray Beltran this Saturday on AWE (Formerly Wealth TV) and www.awetv.com at 3pm eastern / 12 noon pacific.
Burns (36-2, 11 KO’s) of Coatbridge, Scotland which isn’t far from where the fight will take place in Glasgow, will be making the 4th defense of his Lightweight crown.
Burns trained well and is fully ready for what Beltran will bring to the table.
“Training went well. Sparring went fantastic and right now I am just trying to stay sharp and I am on weight. I look forward to the fight”, said Burns just three days before the contest.
Burns believes he knows what to expect from Beltran and he recognizes it won’t be easy.
“I have seen Beltran fight and I know can’t get forced into a brawl. I expect him to be very tough. He hasn’t sparred many rounds with Manny Pacquiao for nothing. I expect a tough fight.”
Many people believe that Burns maybe ripe for the pickings as he struggled to hold on to his title when he was behind on points to Jose Gonzalez before the challenger could not continue due to a hand problem on May 11th.
“I think the lack of fights made me a bit rusty. I was off for eight months. I had two fights fall through. I wasn’t feeling good in the gym and I was over reaching and getting picked off by Gonzalez. He was a better fighter then we expected and he emptied his tank in round seven and believe by the ninth came around he could not continue.”
Burns has longed to fight in the United States and on Saturday he will be exposed to the United States audience on domestic television via AWE. With a win, Burns believes that a trip to the States could be in the cards against a big name opponent.
“When I was told the fight would be broadcasted in America, I said I did not want to put pressure on myself. As long as I win is what is important. After I do that, I would love to do that as it’s always been a dream of mine to fight in America.”
