Javier Fortuna (28-0, 20 KO's) won the vacant WBA super featherweight title by defeating Bryan Vasquez (34-2, 18 KO's) by way of unanimous decision Saturday night at the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn. Scores were 116-112, 117-111, and 117-111.
Fortuna came out looking sharp as he used his movement and speed to keep Vasquez fighting at his pace. He was able to land some big shots early to keep the tough Vasquez at bay. The fight began to pick up in the middle rounds as both fighter's landed huge blows in toe to toe glimpses. When the final twenty seconds of each round came up each fighter went in full blast trying to score a knockout or steal the round. Vasquez began to pick up the pace in round eight and nine as it looked as though Fortuna may have been fading down the stretch but it was Fortuna who landed the big shots boxing his way to victory in the final two rounds.
