British super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton (21-0, 14 KO's) survived two first round knockdowns to defeat a very game Alejandro Gonzalez Jr (25-2, 15 KO's) Saturday afternoon on CBS live from El Paso, Texas. Frampton was hit with a jab in the first minute of the first round that sent him to the canvas. The jab caught Frampton off balance more so than hurting him, however his glove touched the canvas. But once again later in the round Gonzalez would land a heavy right hand that seemed to hurt Frampton a little more, however it was still a punch that caught him off balance.
The first round would be the only round Gonzalez would have success in. Frampton would use the jab to control the fight battering Gonzalez round after round. Gonzalez was deducted one point in the 3rd and another in the 12th for low blows. Frampton won a unanimous decision victory with scores of 115-109, 116-108, and 116-108.
Right before the first round began nemesis Scott Quigg destroyed Kiko Martinez within two rounds. Frampton and Quigg had a fight fall through earlier this year that would have put them against each other. Both UK fighter's have been going back and forth trying to make a fight against each other. It remains to be seen if the mega-fight can be made in the near future
