Olympic Silver Medalist Stevenson signs with Top Rank

Top Rank has inked another 2016 Olympian as silver medalist Shakur Stevenson has joined Bob Arum and company to start off his boxing career. Following his loss in the finals in Brazil there was much speculation as to where the 19 year old sensation was heading with Top Rank not even being mentioned. The first rumor started right in Brazil when Floyd Mayweather posted that Stevenson would be joining TMT. Stevenson came forward one day later stating that an agreement with Floyd Mayweather was not set in stone.

Last month Stevenson signed long time friend and light heavyweight champion Andre Ward on as his manager. This move led some to believe that Stevenson may head over to RocNation, the same promotional company that Andre Ward is under. The move to sign with Top Rank is one that came as a surprise to most however Top Rank has a proven history of creating stars while companies like TMT Promotions and RocNation have yet to prove their worth in the promoter world.

Stevenson fought at 123 lbs in the amateurs. It's likely he'll make his debut at super bantamweight in April. While it may be years before Stevenson reaches an elite status, he finds himself in between two prime boxing divisions whose top names include Leo Santa Cruz, Carl Frampton, Guillermo Rigondeaux, Abner Mares, Scott Quigg, and many more.
