Following his victory Saturday night future Hall of Fame fighter Miguel Cotto stated that he would like his final bout to be against the winner of the middleweight showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin. Cotto will be fighting the final fight of his professional career before the end of 2017. He wants it to be a big fight, with those two names being on the top of the list.
"Come December 31, I will retire. I've done it all. I'm 36 going on 37, and I think I've come to the end of my career. I will fight once more in December. I'll let Freddie [Roach] tell you who I want."
"We want the Canelo-Golovkin winner." Roach stated.
Considering Golden Boy is helping Cotto finish off his career, both fights should be easy to make, although an interest in a rematch with Canelo might be lacking among the fans. Many felt that Canelo handled Cotto easily in there first fight and that a rematch would be pointless. However, a Golovkin-Cotto fight, despite Golovkin probably being a big favorite going into it, could peak some interest since it's a fresh match-up.
Another fighter sitting on the outside waiting to get a shot at Miguel Cotto is middleweight contender David Lemieux. Lemieux is also promoted by Golden Boy. It would be a quick turn around for the winner of Canelo-Golovkin to get into the ring in December. Cotto may not be able to land either fighter so soon. If he's set on December being it for him, Lemieux is another fresh match-up that has gauged the interest of many fans.
