Canelo Alvarez is ready to add to the record book.
The Mexican superstar weighed in at 174.4 pounds for his 12-round, 175-pound title fight against unbeaten WBA champion Dmitry Bivol on Saturday evening at T-Mobile Arena. Bivol, of St. Petersburg, Russia, came in 174.6 pounds, on a makeshift stage at Toshiba Plaza.
The 31-year-old Alvarez weighed a few ounces heavier, 174½ pounds, for his first light heavyweight title fight, an 11th-round knockout of Sergey Kovalev in November 2019 in Las Vegas. Alvarez’s previous four fights were contested at the super middleweight limit of 168 pounds, while Bivol, who is also 31, has fought at the light heavyweight limot of 175 pounds for the entirety of his pro career.
Alvarez (57-1-2, 39 KOs) is expected to fight arch-rival Gennadiy Golovkin (42-1-1, 36 KOs) in their long-awaited trilogy bout if he beats Bivol (19-0, 11 KOs). While their first two fights were fought at middleweight, the third and likely final encounter will take place at the super middleweight limit of 168 pounds for Alvarez's undisputed world championship on September 17 at a venue to be determined.
However, if Alvarez were to lose to Bivol, there is a rematch clause in his contract that can be executed.
On the undercard, Montana Love (17-0-1, 9 KOs), of Cleveland, 140 pounds, takes on Gabriel Valenzuela (25-2-1, 15 KOs), of Mexico, 138.6 pounds, 12 rounds, junior welterweights.
