Dogboe edges Gonzalez, becomes No. 1 contender to featherweight crown

Isaac Dogboe defeated Joet Gonzalez by 10-round split decision on Saturday at the Grand Casino in Hinckley, Minnesota, in a Top Rank Boxing on ESPN main event.

Judge Tim Cheatham scored it for Gonzalez, 96-94, but was overruled by Mike Fitzgerald and Patrick Morley, who each had it 96-94 in favor of Dogboe (24-2, 15 KOs), a former junior featherweight world titleholder. With the win, Dogboe, who suffered both of his losses in title bouts to unbeaten two-division world champ and current WBO featherweight titleholder Emanuel Navarrete, became the No. 1 contender to the WBC 126-pound title title held by undefeated two-division world titlist Rey Vargas.

Gonzalez (25-3, 15 KOs) has lost three of his last five bouts, including a wide unanimous decision loss to two-division world champion Shakur Stevenson in October 2019.
