2023 USA Boxing National Qualifier kicks off next week in Detroit

The 2023 USA Boxing National Qualifier will begin next Monday, March 20, at the Huntington Place in Detroit, Mich., with over 800 boxers from across the country stepping into the ring at the week-long event.

The event is serving as the second qualifier to the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Boxing, which will be held this December in Lafayette, La., for elite boxers (ages 18-40) boxing in one of the 13 Olympic weight categories, while all other divisions look to gain valuable national experience and USA Boxing ranking points.

“We are excited for the city of Detroit to witness some of the top amateur boxers, not only in the United States, but the world, during our National Qualifier next week,” said Mike McAtee, USA Boxing Executive Director. “This event will not only showcase potential 2024 Olympians, but generations of future Olympians and World Champions.”

Over 100 boxers from the state of Michigan are registered to represent the host state throughout the week, including Thomas Covington (Detroit), 2022 USA Boxing Youth National Champion; Kahlil Harvey (Canton), 2022 USA Boxing Junior National Champion; Jasmine Hampton (Ann Arbor), 2022 USA Boxing Elite National Championships bronze medalist; and Justin Lacey-Pierce (Grand Rapids), 2021 USA Boxing Elite National Champion.

Other notable boxers expected to box in Olympic weight classes include Lupe Gutierrez (Colorado Springs, Colo.), 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Boxing Champion; Benjamin Johnson (Springdale, Md.), 2022 USA Boxing Youth National Champion; Quincey Williams (Washington, D.C.), 2021 Junior Pan American Games Champion, as well as Vershaun Lee (Rock Island, Ill.) and Jonathan Mansour (San Diego, Calif.), 2021 World Championships team members.

Competition will be broken into two daily sessions, noon and 6:00 p.m., Monday – Thursday, with Friday and Saturday’s sessions taking place at noon. Tickets may be purchases at the door, $10 for a daily pass or $40 for a weekly pass, with Saturday’s finals tickets available for $25. All purchases are made by card only.
