Intriguing Clash: Luis Alberto Lopez Defends IBF Featherweight Title Against Joet Gonzalez in a Mexican Showdown on Mexico's independence day weekend.
Mexican boxing sensation, Luis Alberto Lopez, is gearing up to make his second defense of the IBF featherweight championship as he faces fellow countryman Joet Gonzalez at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, scheduled for September 15. This 12-round bout, alongside an exciting undercard, will be broadcast live on ESPN+, 10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT.
Lopez, also known as "El Venado," burst onto the international scene in 2015 and solidified his status as a top featherweight by clinching the title with a memorable victory over Josh Warrington. He further showcased his prowess with a fifth-round TKO triumph against Michael Conlan in May. Gonzalez, a 2012 U.S. National Championships gold medalist, turned pro in 2012 but has faced a challenging series of fights recently, including losses to Shakur Stevenson, Emmanuel Navarrete, and Isaac Dogboe in world title contests.
Should Lopez triumph over Gonzalez, it could potentially set the stage for showdowns against pound-for-pound star Naoya Inoue and WBO champion Robeisy Ramirez, adding to his already impressive resume.
For Gonzalez, this is his third attempt at securing the featherweight title. He previously lost unanimous decisions to Shakur Stevenson in 2019 and Emanuel Navarrete in 2021, both in WBO featherweight title bouts.
Currently ranked No. 13 by the IBF, Gonzalez faces a tough challenge in his quest for championship glory.
According to Caesars, Luis Alberto Lopez is the heavy favorite at -800, while Joet Gonzalez is the underdog at +550.
Bet MGM has Lopez as the favorite at -600, with Gonzalez as the underdog at +450.
FightNights predicts a Lopez victory via TKO, potentially within eight rounds.
