Gabriela Fundora wins first world title with fifth-round TKO of Mucino

The first Fundora world champion has been crowned.

Gabriela Mundora put on a clinic Saturday night at Kira Forum in Inglewood, California, scoring two knockdowns of Arely Mucino en route to a fifth-round TKO to win the IBF 112-pound belt in her first title fight.

"We just stayed calm," Fundora said in the post-fight interview on DAZN. "We're not going to go rushing into the fight. That's not smart. So we just stay calm, stay focused and stay in attack.

"And honestly at the end of the first round, we saw that she was hurt so I knew from there it was going to be a long night."

Mucino (32-4-2, 11 KOs), a former three-belt unified flyweight world titleholder, was outclassed from the onset.

The punch stats were also indicative of just how one-sided the bout was. Per Compubox, Fundora landed 136 of 305 punches (45%), while Mucino connected on just 31 of 177 blows (18%).

This was Mucino's first defeat in eight years and the second stoppage loss in her career -- she dropped the IBF belt the first time in a second-round KO to Ava Knight in 2011.

In the meanwhile, the 21-year-old Fundora (12-0, 5 KOs), of Coachella, California, took another step forward in her career. She has been deemed a rising star in the sport since she turned pro at the age of 18. The victory over Mucino also snapped a four-bout steak of unanimous decision victories.

Trained by her father Freddy Fundora, along with her brother, Sebastian Fundora, they had been dreaminf of this moment since the duo laced on their first pair of gloves. But it was Gabriela Fundora who struck gold first and brought honor to her family.

"I'm just going to go enjoy that, enjoy this belt and enjoy the victory with my loved ones and my family," Fundora said. "Take each step as it comes."
