The highly anticipated bout between IBF welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis and mandatory challenger Cody Crowley, scheduled for July 13th in Philadelphia, has been canceled. Crowley withdrew on Tuesday due to complications in his recovery from eye surgery last November. Ennis assured fans via social media that he still intends to fight next month in his hometown.
Crowley failed his pre-fight eye exam, leading to his withdrawal just over a month before the fight date. The fight between Jaron Ennis and Cody Crowley has been called off once again, this time due to a significant health concern.
Promoters, who had only recently finalized the card, have yet to announce whether the event will proceed with a replacement opponent for Ennis. Given Matchroom's heavy promotion of Ennis (31-0, 28 KOs) and his central role as a Philadelphia native, it seems unlikely they will cancel the event altogether.
However, finding a new opponent on such short notice presents a challenge. Despite his championship status, Ennis is not a preferred target for most welterweights, especially on short notice. Nonetheless, Crowley was set to earn nearly $600,000 for the fight, indicating that Matchroom has the budget to offer a lucrative deal to a potential replacement.
The ideal scenario would involve an in-house fighter like Souleymane Cissokho or Shakhram Giyasov stepping in, but fans should temper their expectations.
