Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez is close to finalizing a deal to face Edgar Berlanga in a highly anticipated match on September 14th at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena. This bout will be broadcast on DAZN/Prime PPV.
This event will compete directly with UFC 306, which is set to take place just three miles away at the Sphere.
Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) is coming off a dominant performance against Jaime Munguia, where he secured a one-sided decision victory, flooring Munguia and steadily outclassing him throughout the fight. Following this win, the IBF ordered Alvarez to defend his title against William Scull. However, Scull appears to have agreed to a step-aside deal, allowing Alvarez to pursue the match with Berlanga.
The WBA recently named Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) as Alvarez’s mandatory challenger after longtime interim champion David Morrell Jr moved up to light heavyweight. Berlanga, known as "The Chosen One," ended a five-fight knockout drought by stopping Padraig McCrory in six rounds last February. Despite this, Berlanga’s appeal largely hinges on the Mexico vs. Puerto Rico rivalry, which organizers are expected to heavily promote. Critics argue that Berlanga’s power is overrated, his fundamentals are lacking, and he has shown a tendency to resort to unsportsmanlike behavior when facing adversity.
