After weeks of speculation, it has now been confirmed that former IBF flyweight champion Sunny Edwards will face off against 2020 Olympic gold medalist Galal Yafai on November 30 at BP Pulse LIVE in Birmingham.
Edwards, widely regarded as one of the top technical boxers in Britain, suffered a setback in December when he lost his title and his undefeated streak to the highly skilled Jesse Rodriguez. Since then, Edwards has rebounded with a win against Adrian Curiel in June, and he's now looking to add Yafai's name to his resume while working his way back to a title shot.
On the other hand, Yafai, three years older than Edwards at 31, has far less experience in the professional ranks. With a record of just 7-0 (5 KOs), Yafai is yet to face someone of Edwards' caliber. His victories include a first-round knockout over Tommy Frank, a decision win against Rocco Santomauro, and an eighth-round stoppage of Agustin Gauto. However, Yafai will be well aware that Edwards, who previously defeated him in the amateur ranks, represents a significant step up in competition.
Edwards, now 21-1 (4 KOs), shared his thoughts on the upcoming clash: "This fight has always been inevitable. Our last names carry weight in British boxing and globally, and it’s time to settle the Edwards-Yafai rivalry once and for all.
"Being overlooked for the Olympics due to family connections and city loyalties ignited a fire in me back then. I beat Galal and got sidelined the same year in 2015. Now, this is my chance to show the country who the real golden boy is."
Yafai, for his part, expressed confidence heading into the bout: "I’m thrilled this fight is happening. It’s going to be huge for British boxing. Winning a world title is my ultimate goal, and a victory in my hometown on November 30 will get me one step closer."
