Cleveland’s rising lightweight star Abdullah Mason is ready for whoever steps in front of him. Originally set to face Giovanni Cabrera, Mason will now take on Mexican southpaw Carlos "Chinito" Ornelas in a 10-round special feature on Saturday, April 5, at the Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.
Mason-Ornelas is part of a stacked card headlined by a 10-round heavyweight clash between Richard Torrez Jr. and Guido Vianello. The co-main event will see junior welterweight standouts Lindolfo Delgado and Elvis Rodriguez square off in a high-stakes battle. The entire event will stream live and exclusively in the U.S. on ESPN+.
Mason’s Momentum Meets Ornelas’ Experience
Mason (17-0, 15 KOs), who will celebrate his 21st birthday on fight night, is stepping into his first scheduled 10-rounder with confidence. The rising contender has been on a tear, most recently scoring a fourth-round knockout over Manuel Jaimes in February. After going 5-0 with five knockouts in 2024, Mason has rapidly transitioned from a promising prospect to a must-watch contender.
His opponent, Ornelas (28-4, 15 KOs), brings the most experience of any fighter Mason has faced to date. The 30-year-old has tested himself against elite Mexican opposition and has won three straight since dropping a decision to Rafael Espinoza in 2021. In his last fight, Ornelas handed David Moreno Potrero (16-0-1) his first loss, proving he is still a dangerous challenge.
