Terence “Bud” Crawford, the undefeated four-division world champion boxer from Omaha, Nebraska, was recently recognized by the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) for his remarkable journey from adversity to athletic excellence, as well as his unwavering commitment to community service.
At UNO’s commencement ceremony, Crawford delivered an inspiring keynote address to graduates, sharing his personal story of overcoming a troubled youth in North Omaha. Once expelled from five schools and a victim of violence, Crawford transformed his life through boxing and mentorship. He emphasized the importance of hard work, resilience, and self-belief, quoting Mike Tyson: “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face,” highlighting how setbacks are inevitable but can be overcome through continued effort.
Beyond his boxing achievements, Crawford has dedicated himself to giving back to his community. He co-founded B&B Sports Academy, a nonprofit gym in North Omaha that mentors at-risk youth, teaching them discipline, confidence, and healthy habits through sports. The academy has become a beacon of hope for many young individuals, offering them a positive environment and role models to look up to.
Crawford’s commitment extends internationally as well. In 2014, he traveled to Rwanda and Uganda with his former teacher Jamie Nollette on charitable missions to help build and drill wells, providing clean water to communities in need. His philanthropic efforts continue to inspire others to make a positive impact both locally and globally.
As he prepares for a highly anticipated bout against Canelo Álvarez in September, Crawford remains focused on his mission to inspire and uplift others. He encourages individuals to reject negativity, never become complacent, and always strive for more, using his own relentless pursuit of championships as an example.
Terence Crawford’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, personal growth, and the profound impact one individual can have on their community. His recognition by the University of Nebraska underscores the importance of character and contribution beyond athletic prowess.
