Devon Alexander looked to work himself back up the boxing ranks and getting back to his love of boxing as the upset minded Aaron Martinez ruined Devon plans scoring an 20 to 1 upset Saturday night @ Gila River Arena, Glendale, Arizona, USA on ESPN. Martinez defeated Alexander by UD with scores: 96/94 97/93 97/93.
Devon Alexander came out in round one using the jab and trying to land the right hook. Alexander’s compacted tight punches were effective to a squared fighting Martinez in the early rounds. Alexander continued to capitalize on basic boxing 101 punches as Martinez’s style supported Alexander’s style. As the fight continued into the seconded round Martinez made the fight sloppy standing inside the pocket trading punches with Alexander. Not much changed in the third round as Martinez pressed the fight keeping it toe to toe. Alexander countered inside but Martinez smothering style made it difficult for Alexander. The crowd was clearly not pleased with the performance as they booed on into the 4th round with the fight not changing much from the third. Into the 6th round Martinez continued to press the fight into a phone booth brawl. Martinez’s style allowed Alexander to land straight counters down the center. There was a lot of head clashes as the fight was tight on the inside. Into the ninth Alexander’s corner was very frustrated as it looked like Martinez was starting to control the rounds and finishing strong in the later rounds. In the final round it was much of the same with Martinez pressing the fight inside & Alexander was starting to take a lot of punches. In the end Martinez proved to be to much for Alexander to handle or maybe he just fought the wrong kind of fight style. Alexander maybe could have won if he stayed on the outside using his boxing style.
