Canelo-Golovkin deal "very close," venue to be determined

The president of Canelo Alvarez's promotional company said Sunday that talks to stage a rematch against Gennady Golovkin in May are back underway following a break to enjoy the holidays.

Eric Gomez told FightNights.com by text message Sunday morning "We are close. We are negotiating again. Very close."

Golovkin promoter Tom Loeffler, of K2 Promotions, said in recent weeks that he was hoping to seal the deal before Christmas. Obviously, that didn't come to fruition, but with the holiday season out of the way, there is still plenty of time left to make the fight.

There was some concern that the rematch would be pushed back further after Canelo was promoted by the WBO to the No. 1 ranking at 160 pounds in the weeks leading up to Billy Joe Saunders vs. David Lemieux on Dec. 16.

However, Lemieux, a Golden Boy fighter, was routed by Saunders via unanimous decision. Although the Englishman has called out Mexico's most popular fighter, his elusive style has proved troublesome for Canelo in the past, namely Erislandy Lara, who lost a disputed split decision to Alvarez in July 2014.

Canelo (49-1-2, 34 KO's) and Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KO's) fought to a controversial split draw on Sept. 16 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It is assumed that the rematch will take place in the same venue.

However, officials representing AT&T Stadium in Dallas, the home of the Dallas Cowboys, and Madison Square Garden, have expressed interest in hosting the sequel.
