Ancajas retains 115-pound title with 10th-round TKO over game, but outmatched Gonzalez

Jerwin Ancajas defended his IBF junior bantamweight title with a 10th-round TKO over a game, but outmatched Israel Gonzalez on a Top Rank on ESPN card Saturday at American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Ancajas (29-1-1, 20 KO's), 26, of the Philippines, who is often compared to former eight-division world titleholder Manny Pacquiao, dropped Gonzalez with a big left hand in the opening round, and finished him off with two knockdowns to seal the deal in the 10th.

Although Gonzalez did land some uppercuts to the chin, some counters, and the occasional body shot, the punches had little to no effect on Ancajas, who kept coming forward and landing with his signature one-two combination down the pipe.

Ancajas was candid after the fight and admitted that he is unhappy with all of the comparisons to Pacquiao, but said: "If I can achieve a little bit of the success [Pacquiao] achieved, I'll be very happy."

Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, who is coming off back-to-back wins over top pound-for-pound fighter Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez, including a devastating KO last September, is facing Juan Francisco Estrada in the main event of Superfly 2 on Feb. 24.

Ancajas doubled down on his honesty and doesn't believe he is in the same class as the aforementioned fighters, but his battle is just beginning.

"Those guys are at the top of my division," he added. "I look at myself a bit lower than them. But I'm trying to get there."

As long as he progresses with each fight, Ancajas will be there in no time.
