Gary "Spike" O'Sullivan declines offer to fight Gennady Golovkin on May 5

Unified middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin is in jeopardy of not fighting on May 5.

WBO No. 5 contender Gary "Spike" O'Sullivan, who for weeks has been the leading candidate to replace Saul "Canelo" Alvarez following his two failed drug tests for clenbuterol, will not fight the unbeaten Kazakh.

Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez informed ESPN Wednesday that O'Sullivan rejected an offer to fill in for Alvarez.

FightNights.com has been informed that O'Sullivan turned down the offer because it was made on short notice and the money was below his expectations, despite clamoring for the fight himself on social media.

It is very possible that Golovkin's Cinco De Mayo plans could be axed altogether. But if the fight goes on, the bout will be telecast on regular HBO, not pay-per-view, and the event will move from MGM Grand in Las Vegas to StubHub Center in Carson, California.
