Thurman done for the year following hand surgery

Former unified welterweight world titleholder Keith Thurman announced that he has undergone surgery on his left hand and will be out of the ring for the rest of the year.

"I recently had surgery on my left hand to deal with a nagging injury," Thurman said on social media. "I feel great and can't wait to get back in the ring in early 2020."

Over the last three years, injuries have plagued Thurman’s once promising boxing career

From 2016-2018, Thurman only fought twice. He did not box at all in 2018 due to elbow and hand injuries.

Thurman (29-1, 22 KOs), 30, of Clearwater, Florida, ended a 22-month layoff in January with a majority decision win over Josesito Lopez to retain his WBA “Super” world title for the fifth time.

However, Thurman lost his title and his unbeaten record on July 20 to Manny Pacquiao, who knocked him down hard in the first round and won a split decision in an entertaining affair.

"My injuries have been frustrating, but thanks to your support I'm determined to become a champ again soon," said Thurman.

Thurman, who owns significant victories against Shawn Porter and Danny Garcia in a world title unification fight, also sustained a neck injury during a car accident in February 2016. His fight with Porter, which was initially slated for March of that year, was postponed until that June.

Thurman admitted leading up to the fight that he suffered from depression as a result and even cried after the crash occurred.
