Jermell Charlo to pay for Day's funeral

Patrick Day's family will not have to spend a single dime on his funeral.

FightNights.com has learned that former junior middleweight world titleholder Jermell Charlo has offered to pay the expenses.

Day suffered a 10th-round knockout at the hands of 2016 Olympian Charles Conwell on the undercard of former undisputed cruiserweight world champion Oleksandr Usyk's heavyweight debut, a seventh-round knockout win over Chazz Witherspoon on Oct. 12 at Chicago's Wintrust Arena.

Day was down for several minutes before being taken out of the ring on a stretcher and rushed to the hospital.

He never regained consciousness. He even had a seizure and lapsed into a coma before undergoing emergency brain surgery, succumbing to his injuries four days later.

Two days before Day's death, Conwell, released an open letter to Day on social media.

"I never meant for this to happen to you," Conwell wrote. "All I ever wanted to do was win. If I could take it all back I would. No one deserves for this to happen to them. I replay the fight over and over in my head thinking what if this never happened and why did it happen to you. I can't stop thinking about it myself. I prayed for you so many times and shedded so many tears because I couldn't even imagine how my family and friends would feel. I see you everywhere I go, and all I hear is wonderful things about you."

Day (17-4-1, 6 KO's), of Freeport, New York, came into the fight having lost a 10-round decision to 154-pound contender Carlos Adames on June 28.

Charlo is fresh off a third-round knockout of replacement opponent Jorge Cota in June. Tony Harrison, who controversially outpointed Charlo last December to claim the WBC junior middleweight title, was slated to face Charlo in a rematch but was forced to withdraw after suffering an ankle injury in training.
