Julio Cesar Martinez fails to make weight for Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez fight

Julio Cesar Martinez may have blown the opportunity of a lifetime.

The current WBC 112-pound titlist failed to make weight for his junior bantamweight showdown with Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez on Friday. While the DAZN-streamed main event is still on, there is still a chance the California State Athletic Commission could call off the fight.

The 27-year-old Martinez weighed in at 117 pounds, two pounds over the division limit of 115 pounds. The Mexico native was allocated two hours to make the weight but opted not to use the full time to his advantage and weighed in early. He was still overweight, clocking in at 116.4 pounds, 1.4 pounds over the junior bantamweight limit.

Nicaragua's Gonzalez (50-3, 41 KOs), 34, has decided to move forward with the fight. However, the commission still has the authority to cancel the fight. Per CSAC's rules, Martinez will be fined 20 percent of his purse for failing to make weight. The money will be split evenly between the commission and Gonzalez.

Martinez, who stepped in as a late replacement for Juan Francisco Estrada, will be subject to a same day weigh-in Saturday at 12 p.m. PT. If he checks in 10 percent higher than the contracted weight limit (126.5), he will receive a second fine. If Martinez is more than 15 percent above the limit (132.25), the fight will be automatically canceled.
