Jezreel Corrales recovers from first-round knockdown to outbox Miguel Madueno

Jezreel Corrales got off the deck to put himself in prime position for another title shot.

The former world titlist recovered from a first-round knockdown to defeat previously unbeaten Miguel Madueno in their WBA 135-pound title eliminator by unanimous decision Saturday night at the Roberto Durán Arena in Panama City.

The scores were 117-108, 116-109 and 115-109, all for Corrales, who picked up his third victory in a row following consecutive defeats to Ladarius Miller and Chris Colbert.

Corrales (25-4, 10 KOs), a southpaw from San Miguelito, Panama, who fought at lightweight for the third bout in a row, recovered from his trip to the canvas and used his boxing IQ to keep the heavy-handed Madueno at bay. However, it wasn't the cleanest fight for both fighters as Corrales was deducted two points, one in round three, and again in round eight. Madueno was also docked a point in the third round. In each instance, Corrales was winning the round. Therefore, round three was scored 9-8 by all three judges and round nine was unanimously tallied 9-9.

Madueno (27-1, 25 KOs), 23, a Mexico native based in Orange, California, saw his undefeated record and his 13-bout consecutive knockout streak snapped in the same night.

Corrales won the WBA "Super" 130-pound title in June 2016 with a second-round knockout of former titleholder Takashi Uchiyama. He defended the title twice: a split decision win in a rematch over Uchiyama followed by a technical decision win over Robinson Castellanos. However, Corrales lost the title unceremoniously. He was stripped at the scales and subsequently dethroned by Alberto Machado.

In the main event, Anselmo Moreno (41-6-1, 14 KOs) knocked out late replacement Gustavo Pina Melgar (10-4-2, 5 KOs) in the 10th round. The former 118-pound titleholder was originally slated to face Cesar Ramirez.
