WHAT: SHOWTIME Sports has released two exclusive clips from the upcoming second episode of ALL ACCESS: SPENCE VS. UGAS, premiering Saturday, April 9 at 9:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. PT on SHOWTIME® in advance of the three-belt world title unification showdown between WBC and IBF World Champion Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. and WBA World Champion Yordenis Ugas set for Saturday, April 16 live on SHOWTIME PPV® from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
In one sneak peek clip, Spence looks back at two of the defining moments from his boxing career: the heartbreak of losing at the 2012 Olympics and his first world title win over Kell Brook five years later. Spence explains how his failure in 2012 helped prepare him to become a world champion.
“A lot of people thought it was too early for me to go into foreign territory,” Spence says of his decision to travel to England to challenge Brook for the title in front of his hometown fans. “When you’re an Olympian, a lot of fighters have different styles and you’re used to going to different places to fight. It prepared me for my first world title fight. Going overseas and beating Kell Brook basically just stamped that I am the next big thing and I haven’t looked back ever since.”
In the second clip, Ugas reflects on his once unthinkable choice to walk away from boxing after back-to-back losses in 2014 and how an unlikely figure, New York Yankees star pitcher and fellow Cuban defector and close friend Aroldis Chapman, helped him return to the sport.
“I was left at 15-3, a mediocre record for my quality,” says Ugas. “15-3? I’m not going anywhere.”
“I think Ugas has done the best comeback in the last few years of boxing,” says Ugas’ trainer Ismael Salas.
