Benavidez on Canelo: Everything he was saying was bullsh**, fight me!

Although Canelo Alvarez is a surefire first ballot Hall of Famer, there's a fighter who has been patiently waiting for his turn to fight him.

Following a second victory over Gennadiy Golovkin on September 17, Alvarez became agitated when he was asked questions regarding a possible matchup against former two-time super middleweight world champion David Benavidez.

“What he accomplished? Nothing,” said Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs). “One single champion, Anthony Dirrell.”

For the record, Benavidez has faced two former world titlists. Other than Dirrell, the unbeaten Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs), of Phoenix, Arizona, is coming off a third-round stoppage of former middleweight titleholder David Lemieux.

That probably means little to Canelo, who will be out of action until at least next May following surgery on his left wrist. From Benavidez's standpoint, Alvarez is scared, and understandably so.

“Everything he was saying is bullshit,” Benavidez told BoxingScene.com. “There’s rankings in the WBC for a reason. I've won two back-to-back title eliminators for a reason and won the interim belt. Man, that’s the fight everybody is talking about. Who f------ cares if I fought one world champion. If I’m so easy like he says and he’s not scared to beat me, come beat me.”

Benavidez will likely return to the ring against former IBF titlist Jose Uzcategui in January 2023. The bout has been twice postponed, once for Benavidez testing positive for COVID, and a second time when Uzcategui tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug.

But for now, despite how badly he wants to lay hands on Canelo, Benavidez will have to focus on his own career, and for one, getting more fights under his belt before Canelo will eventually be forced to fight him.

“What I have to do is keep winning and the fight is eventually going to happen. I’m going to be extremely ready for when that happens.”
