Jaime Munguia destroys Coria in three, calls out Golovkin

Jaime Munguia had another quick night of work.

The middleweight contender extended his unbeaten record to 41 with a third-round knockout of unheralded Gonzalo Coria in a Golden Boy Promotions main event in Guadalajara, Mexico on Saturday. The 26-year-old Tijuana native wiped out Coria with an onslaught of left hooks to the body, with the fourth sizzling shot sending his opponent to a knee for the full 10 count at 2:32 of the frame.

Munguia, a former 154-pound titleholder, bided his time to start the fight. However, a counter right hand dropped Coria (21-6, 8 KOs), of Argentina. with 45 seconds remaining in round two.

The 25-year-old Argentine attempted to evade Munguia by getting on his bicycle, but the tires were clearly flat. Once Munguia went to the body, the bicycle and the windpipe crashed against the ropes.

Munguia—now 7-0 at 160-pounds—says he wants to challenge one of the division's titleholders (IBF/WBA titlist Gennadiy Golovkin, WBC champion Jermall Charlo, or WBO titleholder Zhanibek Alimkhanuly) in 2023. The win over Munguia capped off his third win of the year. His prior two wins came against Jimmy Kelly (KO 5 in June) and D'Mitrius Ballard (TKO 3 in February).

In the chief support, junior bantamweight fringe contender Argi Cortes ((24-3-2, 10 KOs) overcame two knockdowns to win a 10-round split decision over former junior flyweight contender Erick Lopez (16-7-2, 10 KOs).
