Regis Prograis' post-bout comments have drawn a challenge from the trainer of Adrien Broner.
On Saturday night, Prograis retained his WBC junior welterweight title with a 12-round split decision over Danielto Zorrilla at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, Prograis' childhood hometown. The bout headlined a Matchroom Boxing card that was streamed on DAZN.
The fight served as Prograis' first defense since winning the title last November with an 11th-round knockout of Jose Zepeda at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
The 34-year-old Prograis signed a three-fight deal with Matchroom last month.
One potential option for the fall is a fight against former four-division world champion Adrien Broner, who returned from a two-and-a-half year layoff to secure a one-sided decision victory over Bill Hutchinson on June 9 in Miami.
“AB is coming back in August and after that he’s only interested in Ryan [Garcia] or Regis,” Broner’s trainer Kevin Cunningham told BoxingScene's Ryan Burton.
“I saw Regis do an interview the other day and he said AB looked shot against Hutchinson. I thought AB looked good considering he hadn’t fought in two and a half years. Hutchinson hadn’t loss a fight in seven years.
“Regis has one elite level opponent on his entire resume and that’s Josh Taylor. The one opportunity he had to prove how great he was, he got his ass whooped. If he thinks AB is so shot lets make it happen!”
Broner is expected to return for a late summer bout before closing out the year with a big fight, whether it be Garcia or Prograis.
