PBC’s upcoming event on June 15th featuring Gervonta Davis vs Frank Martin/David Benavidez vs Oleksandr Gvozdyk seems to be expanding its lineup. Salvador Rodriguez revealed that Carlos Adames is set to defend his inaugural WBC middleweight title against Terrell Gausha, while Héctor Guzmán of Frases de Boxeo mentioned that former WBA super lightweight champion Alberto Puello will face Gary Antuanne Russell.
The recent decision by the WBC to strip Jermall Charlo and promote Adames (23-1, 18 KO) briefly showcased a rare moment of credibility. However, it appears the organization swiftly reverted to its usual questionable practices. Gausha (24-3-1, 12 KO), traditionally a super welterweight, hasn’t fought since narrowly defeating KeAndrae Leatherwood just above the middleweight limit last November. Yet, he curiously ascended from being outside the top 15 at 154 to securing the 10th spot at 160 in the WBC rankings.
The clash between Puello (22-0, 10 KO) and Russell (17-0, 17 KO) offers more intrigue. Puello faced setbacks when he lost his title due to a failed drug test in 2022. However, he received a lenient punishment after proving that he had taken a medication for virility. Returning to action last December, he claimed the belt by defeating the skilled pressure fighter Batyr Akhmedov, establishing himself as a formidable opponent for the talented but rarely seen Russell.
