Bruno Surace pulled off a stunning upset in the boxing world by knocking out Jaime Munguia in the sixth round of their super middleweight main event at Estadio Caliente in Tijuana, Mexico, on Saturday evening. Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) overcame a difficult second round, where Munguia (44-2, 35 KOs) knocked him down with a counter left hook. Despite this, Surace recovered and found an opening in the sixth round when Munguia leaned back with his hands down, offering the perfect target for a powerful right hand. Surace landed the punch of a lifetime, sending Munguia to the canvas, unable to recover.
Surace credited his victory to the counter-punching strategy they worked on, acknowledging Munguia as a "true warrior." He mentioned that middleweight was his true weight class but left the door open for a possible rematch.
On the undercard, there were a few noteworthy results:
Featherweight: Alan David Picasso (31-0-1, 17 KOs) knocked out Yehison Cuello (13-3-1, 11 KOs) in the third round at 1:55.
Junior Middleweight: Jorge Garcia (32-4, 26 KOs) defeated Kudratillo Abdukakhorov (20-4, 12 KOs) via unanimous decision, with scores of 97-92 and 99-90 (two judges).
