Danny Garcia vs Lucas Matthysse adds fire to September 14th

The announcement by Richard Schafer might’ve not been a totally surprising one, but it was still met with glee and excitement from boxing fans worldwide.  The much anticipated fight between Danny Garcia and Lucas Matthysse has been signed, sealed and will be delivered as the co-main event to the blockbuster Mayweather-Canelo fight on The One card.

“The One”, going down September 14th from the MGM Grand was already the most-anticipated boxing event of the year, and that was with much of the undercard being a virtual mystery. Floyd Mayweather pleased the masses and agreed to fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in late May and much of the boxing world took an immediate backseat.  Both fighters recently embarked on a 10-city tour that included Mexico City and saw tens of thousands of fans turn out and build hype for the mega clash.

The Showtime PPV now features two of the best fights that could be made and the sensational Showtime PPV card found a way to increase itself in stature.  The Garcia-Matthysse fight will have it’s own 3-city press tour, which says enough in itself, with stops in New York, Puerto Rico, and Los Angeles.  The two top junior welterweights were rumored to be targeting a September 7th date earlier in the summer but Golden Boy Promotions is clearly aiming to make the September 14th card one for the history books.  The winner of Garcia-Matthysse will not only be the undisputed king at 140, but will have opened the door for his name to be a mainstay on pay per view and perhaps a future opponent for Floyd Mayweather regardless of whether he wins or losses September 14th.

The record for pay per view buys stands at 2.5 million from the May 2007 HBO PPV headlined by Floyd Mayweather – Oscar De La Hoya.  The addition of Garcia-Matthysse has many thinking this Showtime PPV could give that record a true challenge.  Golden Boy exec Richard Schaefer also mentioned that he was in the middle of trying to have 20,000 seats added in Las Vegas due to the strong ticket sales.
