Mayweather-Canelo does 2.2 million PPV buys

Showtime/CBS have finally revealed what many were expecting; “The One” pay per view did astounding numbers both at the gate and on television. Headlined by Floyd “Money” Mayweather taking on Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, “The One” generated 2.2 million pay per view buys and stands to be second all-time as far as PPV purchases. Many were wondering if The One, which also included the highly anticipated Junior Welterweight championship bout between Lucas Matthysse and Danny Garcia, would set the record for pay-per-view buys.  It just fell short of matching the 2.44 million PPVs that De La Hoya-Mayweather generated back in May of 2007.

“The One” did break records in other categories though.  The $150 million revenue is a record, and Golden Boy exec Richard Schaefer said that number could possibly climb up to 200 million.  The Showtime card also saw a live gate reach $20 million for the first time.

The numbers point to an overwhelming success for CBS/Showtime who penned Mayweather to a 6-fight, 30-month deal this past February.   As part of the deal Mayweather has a “unique revenue-sharing agreement” and will make much more then the 41.5 million he was guaranteed for taking on Alvarez.  Canelo also stands to make much more then the meager, in comparison, $5 million he was guaranteed as well.
